Critique Night

Due to the current pandemic situation, Mid-Cheshire Camera Club continued to function in a reduced capacity. Due to the fact, the Club stopped physical meetings in March, a number of summer competitions were arranged by Ray and Kath Hill. The images were judged by our resident Judge - Ian Whiston. The process was made very simple by the recent uptake by the club to allow members to use Dropbox to submit images.

For tonight's meeting, Ian selected images from two of the summer competitions. The evening took the shape similar to "Through Your Lens" where the image author was able to add comment and ask questions. Ian took the lead providing similar critique given by visiting judges. Ian was not restricted by time and was able to go deeper into how images could be improved and was able to evidence his comments through the magic of Zoom. Suggestions for improvements covered areas such as;
  • Composition
  • White or bright areas around the edge of the image
  • Colour Balance especially any greens
  • Considering monochrome over colour
  • Highlight control
  • Lifting shadows
  • Over sharpening / contrast
  • Brightening the subject to pop them from the background

Taking into consideration the new format of the meetings, this was a very successful night. A big thank you to Ian Whiston for sharing his knowledge and experience in critiquing our images and to Ray and Kath Hill Hill for organising the evening.
