Open Competition 2 Mono

Mid-Cheshire Camera Club was pleased to welcome back one of the region’s most respected judges, Diana Magor (EFIAPb, APSA, MPSA, CPAGB, LRPS, BPE3*) from Hoylake P.S. Her task was to judge our second League competition of the season and as Diana particularly enjoys mono images we were keen to hear what she would make of our 40 PDI’s and 14 prints.

Diana did not disappoint us. Her judging was consistent and provided a fair and thorough critique of every image plus suggestions on ways they could be improved including some helpful Photoshop tips.
Diana explained that a good mono image needs a full range of tones from black to white and when she found any image that was rather “grey” she showed which areas of the image needed darkening and those that needed lightening. Diana felt that many of the images could be brought alive with some extra post-processing work and she urged the more experienced members to give a helping hand to those less proficient in the dark art of Photoshop etc. Having held back her favourite images based on technical quality, impact and abiding interest, Diana then had to find her top three:

All in all, it was an enjoyable evening with a great atmosphere and one member said that Diana provided the best judging he had heard in a long time. We hope we will be able to welcome her back next season.
