Us photographers often discuss kit, camera settings and great locations to take fantastic images. But how often do we really talk about and look to improve our knowledge of our post-processing skills or even still, how often do we ever ask for advice about how we manage all our images on our computers.
Some of us we look to Youtube or a photography magazine for advice and inspiration on our chosen software package but, it is not often we get a chance to have an award-winning professional photographer come to our club and talk about how Adobe Lightroom works. Members of Mid-Cheshire Camera Club were treated to a fantastic educational presentation by Simon Watkinson who is a professional landscape and travel photographer based in Derbyshire.
Love it or loathe it, Adobe software packages have a monopoly in the post-processing world. Whether your preferred workflow starts with Lightroom, Photoshop or any other software package, one thing for sure is we all know that without the software we are not able to maximise the true potential of our images. With this in mind, Simon had been invited to the club to showcase his Lightroom presentation. He started from the very beginning explaining all the various different screens and dialogue boxes in relation to importing images, reviewing images and adding keywords. He went into depth over the Library module providing examples of how collections work then moving onto the Develop module explaining and advising us on the best settings that he has found that work and why. He explained the use of the various sliders and how they affected the image. Importantly Simon was keen to emphasise the power of Lightroom’s ability to manage all your images. Lightroom being equipped with a powerful search engine - Simon was able to provide us with real-life examples of how easily he was able to locate an image within a catalogue of thousands.
Simon was able to dispell all the myths of Lightroom presenting in a quiet, confident manner captivating the 30 strong audience with his unique style and in-depth knowledge of Lightroom. I left the meeting feeling fulfilled having learned something new and eager to try out some of the suggestions from the presentation.
