Open Competition 3

Mid-Cheshire Camera Club’s turn out for tonight’s mono open competition was good and was mirrored by the large submission of 24 prints and 51 projected digital images giving our judge had the unenviable task of critiquing over the next two hours. Our Chairman Ian Whiston settled the meeting and introduced Tilman Kleinhans (ARPS, DPAGB, EFIAP/b, BPE2*) - our Judge for this quite special open competition.

As this is an Open competition, members are able to submit images from any genre. Genres from tonight’s selection of images included: Portraiture, Journalism, Record, Architectural and Natural History. The only difference between this open competition compared with other open competitions is that all the images have to be presented in monochrome – black and white.

Tilman introduced himself and started off the night with his interpretation of what he was looking for in a good mono image. He stated that he wanted to see a good range of tones from pure blacks to bright whites and every tone in between. He didn’t want to see much grey. During his critique, he added that too much grey makes an image flat lacking contrast.

Tilman never stands still pacing backwards and forwards examining every detail of the image that he is judging. You can tell he is feeling the emotion of an image, deciding in his mind what it visually means to him, how it makes him feel, how it makes him react. He is able to articulate his inner emotions to the audience in a sensitive manner bringing in ideas for improvement and offering praise when appropriate. In fairness to Tilman, having seen a number of his judging events he always caveats his presentation with the fact that he is expressing his views accepting that others may disagree. He provided usual feedback in relation to shape, Texture, Lines and Composition but his main focus was aimed at the quality of the mono conversion.

The result for this month’s open competition is as follows:
